Peche Mel Scaldis by Brasserie Dubuisson
Beer: Peche Mel
Style: Fruit Beer
Peche Mel was born as a popular student beer cocktail. Students mixed a blend of of Amber Ale and peach-based Geuze. The Brewery adopted the idea and started brewing this blend in 2009. At the same time, Peche Mel is said to be the strongest fruit beer in Belgium.
Peche Mel Scaldis pours a hazy amber, peach skin colour with a white dense head that dissipates quickly leaving a 5 mm ring inside the glass, and some traces of lacing. This is a peach power beer with all the aromatics revolving around peach: freshly cut ripe peach, peach jam, peach marmalade, candied peach.
Flavours very much echo the aromas, but there are also delicious tones of apricot, lemon zest, and mango. As the beer warms up, pleasant earthy flavours pop up – grass, hay and fruit stems… Some spiciness is there, too – cloves and black and red pepper.
Peche Mel is a medium body beer with rich mouthfeel on the edge of being cloying and with enough carbonation to cut through the peach sweetness. The finish is moderate, off dry. The aftertaste is prolonged with a pleasant candied peach flavour with a touch of bitterness in the back.
Don’t be fooled by the sweetness and easy drinkability of this beer. This is an 8.5% brew after all… A delicious 8.5% brew. A true peach power brew!
Fruit beers are usually associated with sweet desserts. However, try pairing this deliciousness with pork tenderloin, beef carpaccio, green salads, barbecue sausages and wide range of cheeses, including blue cheese.
